H.E Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, the Deputy Prime Minister for political affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, held a meeting today in Kabul with Roza Otunbayeva, the Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and her delegation. During this meeting, Ms. Otunbayeva expressed her sorrow over the recent explosion in Kabul and extended her condolences.
Ms. Otunbayeva commended the Islamic Emirate’s stance and commitment in combating narcotics, highlighting that UNAMA is working towards organizing a joint conference with various countries and institutions. This conference aims to discuss alternatives to poppy cultivation, the treatment of drug addicts, and assistance for Afghan farmers. Representatives of the Islamic Emirate will be invited to participate.
She further emphasized that extensive efforts are necessary to mitigate the impact of several decades of drug production and trafficking in Afghanistan, and to provide viable alternatives for drug cultivation and employment for the Afghan population.
Ms. Otunbayeva also briefed the Deputy Prime Minister on her recent visit to Afghanistan's southern provinces, informing him that UNAMA’s upcoming quarterly report on Afghanistan will be shared with the United Nations Security Council.
H.E Mawlvi Abdul Kabir, while welcoming the Head of UNAMA and her delegation, stated that the Islamic Emirate has established a high-level commission to effectively combat narcotics.
Following consultations with relevant Emirate institutions, this commission will engage in joint meetings with UNAMA and other international organizations.
He reiterated the Islamic Emirate’s clear stance against narcotics, affirming that it prohibits the cultivation and trade of all types of drugs.
In conclusion, H.E Mawlavi Abdul Kabir noted that the cooperation of international organizations and countries in the fight against narcotics can yield significant results. He also emphasized that UNAMA should present the facts and recent developments in Afghanistan to the United Nations Security Council.
