The Gulkhana Palace is located in the northwestern part of the Arg Fortress. Originally, it was a greenhouse where flowers were cultivated. However, over time, a palace was constructed there. The exact date of the palace's construction is not known, but it is believed that the office of Mohammad Nader Shah's administrative office, known as the "Doubani," was once situated there.
During the reign of King Muhammad Zahir Shah, the Gulkhana Palace was modernized. At that time, it also housed the office of the Prime Minister, where he held many of his meetings. Over the years, the palace became the administrative center for various rulers and witnessed numerous tragic events. One of the most significant was during the coup, when Afghanistan’s first president, Sardar Muhammad Daoud Khan, was assassinated on the first floor of the Gulkhana Palace, facing the staircase.
