Kotay Baghcha

Kotay Baghcha

Kotay Baghcha is one of the earliest edifices within Arg , constructed in a circular form over two levels, encompassing an area of approximately 300 square meters. The architectural design of this building is derived from the Timurid period, incorporating distinctive features such as arches, domes, and colonnades that are characteristic of Timurid architecture.

Amir Abdul Rahman Khan brought engineers and architects from Kandahar to Kabul with the task of constructing buildings for the Arg. They designed Kotay Baghcha in the Timurid style. The construction of Kotay Baghcha began in 1300 AH and was completed in 1304 AH. At one point, part of the building was used as a museum. In 1303 AH, the Kabul Museum was moved from Bagh Bala to Kotay Baghcha in the royal Arg, where it remained until 1310 AH. During the reign of Muhammad Nadir Shah, the museum was relocated to Dar-ul-Aman, and later, under the direction of Mohammad Zahir Shah, the royal library was established in Kotay Baghcha.
